Since April, I had sent around 300 MTG foils to CGC and 85 90's parallel and relics to BGS. (My shops have been sending PTCG/Yugioh cards to PSA/BGS but since I have been a silent partner, I never really interested in day to day operation.) When I talk about this topic, I understand totally, even you send Diamonds to GIA, we will never have a 100% accurate standard for various reasons so I always have rooms for inconsitencies and so on.
When I look at cards from CGC, I sent 3 shipments in total, you know they might be somehow holding grades, but when you pick up anycard from the 3 shipment and look at the grading , usually cards from the same sets would have a more consistent grading. Like if a very slight whitened corner was graded 8.5, then most of the corners from the same sets were graded this way. So I believe cards that they think should be a 9.5 will have a chance to be 9.5 as well as a 6 will have a chance to be 6.
Things are totally different from BGS. I have sent 10 cards from a set in 2 shipments, I do not want to say the standard one was graded harder, I would rather say the gradings look more "fixed". For instance, let's say card A was graded 8.5 with a surface of 9.5, it happened not only on 1 case, I also have card B from the same set which was also grade 8.5 with a surface of 8.5 but having way less problem on the surface. (Despite I do not have a GIA cert, I have been playing with diamonds since I was a kid, so I think spoting the subtle flaws with proper eq from a card is something I can confidently do.) What do I mean, I mean A should have a surface of at best 8.5 and the card would be graded 8, whilst B should have a surface of at least 9 which the card would be graded a 9 or even 9.5. (Base on how surfaces were graded from the 10 cards from the set)
It really sadden me. I mean my cards sent is not large enough to draw a conclusion, but base on what I experience, it is painful seeing all of the cards were not graded FAIRLY. Yes, I might benefit from some, like A was graded 8.5 and I might lost from some when B was graded 8.5; but I guess I would rather let a grader grades my cards as close to what they are rather than getting an AVERAGE grade. Of cos I am new to the hobby, my FEELING might be wrong. (But I heard a lot of bad things from BGS, I just graded with them because I like their slabs)
Has BGS always been grading card like this?
