How do you feel about long detailed Instagram posts?

I tend to ramble a bit in the description when I post a card. I'm likely excited about attaining or posting it. But, I've sold maybe 1-2 cards on IG in the couple years I've been on there. I sell almost exclusively on eBay, so anyone reading my IG description is not my buyer audience.

Posting cards without a description seems too stale for me, personally. I follow plenty of great accounts that don't say anything about their posts, too. But, I've had lots of interactions from people replying to what I'm saying. I've also learned a lot from people's descriptions about their cards and engaged with them about it as well. And I'm a big fan of seeing pack/player odds for my own knowledge.

I'm sure some people are pumping for a sale, but I tend not to follow accounts like that. At the very worst, people don't have to read the descriptions if they're just there for the cards. I enjoy the chance for learning, teaching, or interaction.

Heavily agreed on these points - I enjoy crafting a little description and it's nice to know if I forget odds or any other little descriptors on some of my cards, I can look back and use my ig post as a reference.

The other big reason I do it is to promote good talk or questions. I think you get a lot more meaningful engagement if you post some interesting info rather than just the picture. I have seen cool accounts too that only post pics. I have learned a lot from others' posting about their cards too, especially on rarities/oddities that don't pop up often.

I enjoy when collectors post stories of why certain cards are meaningful to them and what makes it special. It's part of the reason why I set up at shows, to connect with collectors and share our experiences in the hobby.

Being in the hobby for a while, you can often see right through someone's post.
An example would be listing the pack odds of a particular player. Not too long ago, whenever someone would mention pack odds for a Specific player we knew what that member wanted to do.
"Odds of pulling particular insert 1:36...20 players in set so odds of pulling X player is 1:720 packs...20 boxes per case...only 1 per case...that makes it super duper rare. Hate to let it go but you can purchase my copy for X amount."

Pack odds are great for collectors, but obviously it can be manipulated in a way to increase sales. We should just enjoy the card for what it is and leave the fluff alone. I've seen tactics like this work on less seasoned collectors and it makes me want to say something but to each their own.

I think those posts can, at large, be summed up in one line:

"I'm going to be selling this card, or one like it in the near future, this is why you need to throw money at me."

Is that the case 100% of the time, no, but IG has got to be the most disingenuous, two-faced crowds I've ever seen. Most of these guys pretending to be genuine hobbyists are pigs wearing lipstick.

There are plenty of player collectors and team collectors on IG! Doesn’t mean you won’t see a story sale from time to time, but just follow the accounts you like

I’m very selective as to who I follow on IG, probably to selective at times. But those people I follow it’s because I appreciate their content. So if they are going to take the time to write a lengthy post or create a video I’m going to take the time to appreciate what they are sharing.

For the first few years of having an account, I wish I didn’t just immediately follow back people out of some dumb courtesy I had in mind. It’s nice because I have such a better awareness of the player collectors out there, but at the same time it seems half my feed is flooded with stuff I’m not as interested in.

I do a purge of people I follow a few times a year. It's surprising how many accounts go dormant or turn into photos of their dog or whatever. And that's fine. But I have zero interest in following those types of accounts.
