The Hobby Boards

I figure we all have those cards that we kinda want...but there's something about it that's preventing us from pulling the trigger. I'll start with a couple of mine.

Pacers dazzle cards from 2018 Threads. Can you spot the major problem? All of the veteran Pacers have it....a Nuggets logo. Ugh, and I liked that product a lot, too.



The next one has to do with a number change. Not many cards feature a player's number prominently displayed on the front. It brings back old Showcase vibes (which I love). I wanted to pick up the gold version of this card, but the number bothered me more than it should. I might still grab it some day anyway.

Always. I look at it as a good thing in the sense it makes me spend less. I alluded to that in the spreadsheet thread too but for a different reason.

Here’s my prime example. This is one of my favorite set designs ever of one of my pc guys, but there’s something glaringly wrong with the photo.

The wrong logo would be an absolute deal breaker for me as a team collector. With all due respect to other teams, I don't want their logos defiling my cards. The thought of the number change doesn't bother me as I think it should, nor the photo issue. Is the Jordan photo off because of the hand/ball? Looks like the ball placement isn't quite consistent with Jordan's pose, photoshopping the basket out makes sense.

For me, memorabilia cards using jerseys that don't match the photo on the card are absolutely a barrier to purchasing. It drives me nuts and is counterproductive on some level.

Ya, and rim obviously. I want to say there was a card where they left the rim but removed the net.

Any card that says "Traded to xxxx" while displaying the player in their old team uniform.

Yea I just don’t like how it looks with the hoop photoshopped out, makes his bare hand look awkward to me. Almost looks like some weird downward volleyball spike.

I like how you can even see the shadow of the net on his arm.

For me it’s the white sparkle Prizm cards which I see show up for my pc guys for cheap quite often. I’ve read about the print runs, the design is ok”ish”, but I just never pulled the trigger. I guess those packs have always just seemed like a big cash grab and it’s always rubbed me the wrong way, Idk.. lol

^ i’m with you on the white sparkles. for me the super glittery cards always feel a bit corny, though i know some people love em.

speaking of corny, I don’t own either of these RJ Barrett rookies despite being a Knicks collector because the photos strike me as cheesy and awkward. RJ is a bit of a corny dude so it’s fitting i guess. but in general a bad photo can drive me away from a card.

I love the 2010 Totally Certified set… I just hate the sticker autos. Same with Gold Standard. So much potential and some hype as a more premium set, but the autos don’t line up.

Agree, those are some awful RJ photos.

Here’s another example of a card that I will never add to the pc despite loving the actual set. The photo itself sucks already, but with the puffy Magic uni looking more like a North Face than a jersey… no thanks.

Such a shame, I love the foil design.

Looks like Calipari shares your outrage. He prob didn’t get the 1997 equity memorandum.

I think my answer is a bit shallow but realistic. Because, they are over my budget......

Mine is a football example, but I collect from the 90's. And most of the Carolina Panther options feature Rae Curruth. He was their 1st round pick and a WR, so he was a popular choice for most releases. But sadly he choose to murder his girlfriend who was pregnant at the time a couple years into his playing career. So easy to see why its tough to stomach purchasing his cards.
