I've been on a mission to find a nice Heather Langenkamp ("Nancy" in A Nightmare on Elm St.) auto for roughly a year and a half. She has no certified pack-inserted autograph cards, so I have waffled over buying an authenticated autograph of several different cards she was featured on from the Nightmare sets released in the late 80's/early 90s. Nothing ever quite scratched the itch for me, though.

About 3 months ago I decided to take matters into my own hands a bit. I decided to buy a custom card from a UK-based eBay seller, intending to mail it to her eventually and hoping for a TTM auto. That plan changed recently when I was looking at horror conventions in Indiana. Sure enough, Heather was going to be at a convention about 20 minutes from my house. I bought tickets for a photo op because I wanted to have the memory documented. My 9-year-old and I set out this morning to try to get my card signed. I had never been to a horror convention before today. It's an interesting sort of event, but in a very cool way.

All in all, we got to chat with Heather 3 different times, and she was an absolute sweetheart. Made my childhood crush feel warranted after all these years

She remembered our names each time and talked to my son (he wears glasses) about how old she was when she first got glasses and how that went. She asked what other movies we're into, and I told her my favorite franchises are the Nightmare franchise and the Alien franchise, and how she and Sigourney Weaver are the best heroines in movies, in my mind. She told me how much she loves Sigourney too. She was just the absolute best possible celebrity interaction I could have imagined. I made sure to tell my son how not all celebrities are like her and how special it is that she's so down to earth. He became a big fan today too (even though he hasn't seen any of her movies yet).

And here's the finished product. I don't think it could have turned out any better.

Upper Deck, the NHLPA, and the NHL are teaming up to bring collectors and hockey fans as close to the action as possible this year at The National Sports Collectors Convention. On Thursday, July 30 from 2-4 PM, some of hockey’s top prospects will make a special visit to The National at the Upper Deck booth (345 & 545). Gavin McKenna, Porter Martone and Cole Hutson headline the list of 22 players who will be interacting with fans in person and online.

The players will hang out at the Upper Deck Breaker’s Lounge, opening packs with collectors and taking pictures with fans as part of Upper Deck’s personalized trading card station (stay tuned to Upper Deck social on Thursday, July 30 for details on how to have a chance to participate). They will also be participating in the hobby’s top podcasts and joining eBay Live.

In addition to visiting Upper Deck’s booth, the players will also take to the show floor, joining some Certified Diamond Dealers at their booths to break product and join live breaks online.

 Be sure to head to the Upper Deck booth on Thursday, July 30 at 2 PM to meet some of the NHL’s most exciting prospects and enjoy the greatest sports card show in the world with Upper Deck, the NHLPA, and the NHL.

The box packaging serves as the front facing introduction to the game’s world, utilizing Sandoval’s signature angular lines and bold, modern comic style. We asked Sandoval how he gave each of these iconic villains their own spotlight on the box art, despite their competingly large personalities. Sergio responded “You have to think about each character’s personality, their special abilities, and how they face their enemies. Once you have that clear, you have to think about the sizes of each of them, so that they are all different, but occupy a similar space in the illustration. If the character is very small, you can add more striking elements, and if it is very large, you can place it behind the other characters. The composition must be balanced and none of them should stand out too much above the others”. Sandoval also emphasized how important shadows, highlights, and colors are when depicting Batman

: The Animated Series’ Gotham City

. Sergio explained, “Batman

: The Animated Series is a work with a very defined character in terms of color and drawing. But Gotham

is a very dark city, which contrasts with its blue and electric red skies. This influences the very strong lighting for the characters, as if they were illuminated by a flashlight in the dark. This gives them very vivid colors and very defined shadows”.

Sergio Sadoval was also the mastermind behind creating the Villain Boards for the Enemies of

Gotham City

game. We asked him how he used background art to add to the story and emotion tied to each villain. To which he responded, “That was a really easy task, since these characters have so many stories behind them and it was very easy to capture the scenes that Ricky Le (Art Acquisition Coordinator at Upper Deck) and Caleb Cleveland (Visual Art Specialist at Upper Deck) proposed to me”. Sergio’s favorite Villain Board to work on was Clayface

. He said “He’s a character who, despite having a fairly specific anatomical structure, is very irregular and very brutal. This gives me a lot of flexibility to exaggerate the different aspects I like best, such as his big arms or hands, and draw the roughness of his skin however I want. I love it!”.

We believe that effects that prohibit players from taking certain game actions are both necessary and an interesting design space. What we don’t believe is that these effects should be asymmetrically backbreaking. The interaction with Python and Ryujin’s Rush ability creates a play pattern that is neither interesting or enjoyable. While it proves an objectively powerful action to take, player sentiment and experience vastly outweigh that. For that reason, Python, Spite of Hera is banned.

Toad Wahy
Toad Wahy has been a swiss army knife from the start being a 1-drop with 2 pips, a strong keyword, and a relevant champion type. Typhon has solidified itself as one of the strongest decks in the format, presenting early victory conditions with his Rush ability. Toad Wahy adds a level of resilience to this strategy that we find is a bit too strong. In an effort to soften up the beast pile, Toad Wahy is banned.

Troublesome Tanuki and Salt Block (Infusion)
The rules update regarding the procedure for drawing a card without a deck poses a significant remedy to current infinite combos, but if these two cards are still available, it does not solve the problem of starting your turn with no deck and no cards in hand. To encourage some alternative scrap-based win conditions and to avoid a poor play experience, Troublesome Tanuki and Salt Block are both individually banned.

Descent into Yomi
While we do want to promote setting up exciting and impactful champions to resurrect ahead of curve with things like Vision Serpent and Curse of the Defiler, we find that Descent into Yomi is far too efficient and consistent. To encourage alternative ways of putting a champion in the graveyard, Descent into Yomi is banned.

Disguised Shinobi + Roaring Aegis
It is no question that avatar powers are some of the most interesting and utilized effects in the game and using them each turn is something we find exciting. However, Disguised Shinobi with Roaring Aegis offers a repeatable two 2 damage plus a free avatar power for just 1 influence. This is a rate we have found to be too aggressive and powerful, therefore it is banned.
